Why I’m the 49ers Fangirl

My journey as the 49ers Fangirl began on January 14, 1990 when my family and I attended the 1989 NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams. A native Angeleno, I was rooting for the Rams. Then at some point, in the middle of the second quarter, I turned to my mom and said, “I love Joe Montana.” And that was it. I have been a die-hard, gold blooded Niner faithful ever since.

As a teenage girl, I watched every game, dressed in good luck outfits on game days – even if those days were Monday and I had school. I educated my teenage girlfriends about Steve Young and Elvis Grbac, while discussing Tom Rathman, Jerry Rice, and Ricky Watters with my teenage guy friends. I cried when the Niners lost to the Giants in the 1990 NFC Championship game – that damn Matt Bahr field goal!

Instead of a Sweet 16, I went to Dallas for the NFC Championship game. I was at Super Bowl 47 for the almost greatest Super Bowl comeback ever, and I sat in Century Link Field for the 2013 NFC Championship game where the Niners were one tipped pass away from going back to the Super Bowl. For those game, I kept my tears on the inside, at least in public. I’ve cheered on every quarterback from Montana to Young to Elvis Grbac to Jeff Garcia to Alex Smith to Colin Kaepernick. From 14-2 to 6-10 to 12-4 to 5-11, I’ve stayed strong.

A sportswriter in college at The University of Michigan – Go Blue! (yes I have conflicting emotions about the whole Jim Harbaugh thing, happy to discuss), I decided to start a blog during the 2014 season. I pace during games; I stand during the 4th quarter; I don’t eat on Sundays. My dogs – one of whom is named Kappy – have jerseys. I am convinced my choice of outfit on game day can be the difference between a win and a loss, and I have been known to change in the middle of a game, even at Levi’s Stadium. I fly to Santa Clara from Los Angeles for every home game. I have a blog, a YouTube channel, and a weekly podcast about my guys in the red and gold. I am the 49ers Fangirl. Like the team, I’ll make you laugh; I’ll make you cry; but together, we’ll get through it bleeding gold and staying Niner Faithful forever. GO NINERS!

I created Fangirl Sports Network as a place for female sports fans to follow their favorite teams with content and coverage that speaks directly to females. It started with one and then eight and now 32 NFL Fangirls and 15 NBA Fangirls.
