Kap Breathes, Gabbert Leads, Defense Shines in 49ers Win

49ers Blaine-Gabbert-and-Kap

If the San Francisco 49ers looked like a different team in their win over the Atlanta Falcons, it’s because in many ways, they were a different team in their win over the Atlanta Falcons, literally and figuratively. Jim Tomsula event went for it on 4th down – twice!

Back-up QB Blaine Gabbert, who was 5-22 as a starter going into the game, was starting for the breathless Colin Kaepernick. Running back Carlos Hyde was out. Wide receiver Anquan Boldin was out. Cornerbacks Tramaine Brock, Kenneth Acker, and Keith Reaser were out. You see the trend. But, that, my friends, is why they play the game.

On a day the 49ers should have lost, they went ahead and beat a struggling Atlanta team. I had many a doubt about Blaine Gabbert, but I have to admit, the man played well. Granted the Falcons’ defense is hardly menacing, but Gabbert was 15 of 25 for 185 yards with two TDs, two INTs, and zero sacks. He ran for 32 yards, including a key five-yard run on third down with two minutes to go in the game, which pretty much sealed the win. He was comfortable in the pocket and had an overall good game. Am I ready to anoint him the 49ers’ starter for the season – as if it’s my decision? No. But, he impressed me.

That being said, this was a team win through and through, and the 49ers’ defense shined. NaVorro Bowman was a blitzing machine, recording a sack, while Aaron Lynch did the same, continuing his trend as a pass rusher to fear. Safety Jaquiski Tartt looked awesome with four tackles, each looking stronger than the next. It was a good day.

That’s the good news. Now, the bad news. The Niners are still in last place in the NFC West at 3-6. There’s still a sorta quarterback controversy. And after the bye week, the 49ers are off to Seattle, which is always a treat for the red and gold. Long road ahead Faithful, but if nothing else, today was a good day. Go Niners!
